This weekend, we had a private Black Belt Testing over at Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy. I’ve been training for nearly 20 years and over that time period, we’ve had quite a few Testings. One of our Master Testings was featured on CNN Headline news even! Each Testing is always different, always unique and like a rebirth.
I say “rebirth” because even though attaining the rank of Black Belt means a person has accomplished a lot, it is also a time for reflection and humbleness. It is a wonderful time to celebrate, but also a time to bow the head down and recognize that it is only the beginning, that there is so much more yet to learn.
This weekend’s Testing featured 3 Black Belt men, each over the age of 60, one of them age 72! They’ve actually had several mini-Testings over the past few weeks. Part of the excitement surrounding our Testings is that, like I said, they are never the same, so we never know what to expect.
Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim helps her students grow through the challenges we face. It would be very easy to conduct a Testing that was a cookie cutter form of the Testing before it: spar, break some boards & bricks, do forms, say a few words. But, there is no excitement in routine for Testing!
These gentlemen faced incredible challenges, just like younger Testing candidates would face. Great Grandmaster didn’t go easy on them just because of their age! And, there was no way that those gentlemen would want to be treated any differently or given any sort of special allowances. They are Warriors, through and through.
Congratulations to Great Grandmaster for a wonderful Testing and congratulations to the newest promotions to the 2nd Dan Black Belt Level!
